|
My name is Joe Mosher. I want to begin by telling you that coaching basketball is my passion. Basketball has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up playing minor basketball for the Fairview-Clayton Park Warriors before moving on to Halifax West High School. In March of 1995 (my grade ten year) we defeated QEH in an exciting game in Truro to win the NSSAF Provincial Championship. However, months later I tore the ACL in my left knee. The injury ended up keeping me from playing another game of high school basketball. Since I was no longer able to play basketball my grades began to fall. I was actually expelled from Halifax West in 1998 during my fourth year. After being expelled I took a minimum-wage job at Zellers. I worked the overnight shift (11 p.m.-7:00 a.m.) for $6.01 an hour. During that time I often found myself in trouble. It seemed as though my life was going nowhere. However, everything began to change when I got a call from Jim Gannon, one of my former coaches. Jim was, and still is, the president of Fairview-Clayton Park Minor Basketball. He asked me if I’d be interested in coaching a mini team for his club. I hadn’t really thought much about coaching until then but I agreed to coach the team. I believe that it was that phone call that turned my life around. Coaching those kids made me feel that I had something to offer. I desperately needed something positive in my life and coaching young people proved to be just that. I went back to Halifax West for a fifth and final year, and I ended up surprising a lot of people, including myself. I graduated in June of 1999 with an 82% average, and continued to coach basketball all through university. Everything seemed to be falling into place for me. Coaching basketball made me realize that I wanted to have a career that would give me the opportunity to help young people. I went on to graduate from Saint Mary’s in 2003 with a Bachelor or Arts, and Acadia in 2006 with a Bachelor of Education. I am currently entering my third year as an elementary school teacher in Halifax. My son Jonah was born on January 22, 2002 (minutes before the start of a game between my Fairview bantam team and the Bedford Eagles). He has grown up in Metro basketball gyms, and he really looks up to many of the kids I’ve coached over the years. They are great role models for him and I try to have him around basketball as much as possible. Jonah has started playing ball himself. I currently coaching him in the Steve Nash Youth Basketball program with the West End Steelers. I’ve been truly blessed to have had the opportunity to coach so many great kids over the years. They have done a lot more for me than I’ve done for them. I am looking forward to many more years of coaching basketball in Halifax.

Joe
